MURRAY BUSHRANGERS - 10.12.72
EASTERN RANGES - 7.4.46
The Eastern boys traveled the few hours up the freeway to Shepparton with one goal - to claim the four points over the third-placed Murray Bushrangers.
Belief amongst the players was high, and with the coach’s message of ‘just play the game’ fresh in their minds, they responded to Murray’s first goal with the next four of the quarter.
The lead was 19 points at quarter time, but Murray were able to win the second quarter and bring it back to ten points at the main break. A fantastic dribble goal from the boundary right on the siren gave the boys some extra spirit going into the break.
Unfortunately, that was where it all stopped. The third quarter was a disaster, held scoreless while Murray kicked 3.6 - and in the end somewhat lucky that they missed plenty of chances.
The game was still there to be won in the final quarter - but a few 50-metre penalties here, a missed target there - all proved to be our undoing in a disappointing second half. Especially after such a bright and promising first half where the possibility of returning home with a win was alive.
The final margin of defeat was 26 points.
Best players for Eastern were Lachlan Stapleton, Mitch Mellis, James Blanck, Kye Quirk, Jarrod Gilbee, and Bailey White.
