Saturday’s home match against GWV Rebels promised to be a positive one for the Eastern boys if they brought their best football from the start. Unfortunately, it proved to be a very disappointing day, losing at home by 53 points.
The first quarter began under light winds, blue skies, and sunshine - rare conditions for a mid-winter match. The first goal of the day went our way with Adrian Kalcovski opening proceedings.
From then until partway through the third quarter, GWV kicked ten of the next eleven goals, dramatically inflating the margin and making things very challenging for the home team.
While there were several passages of play where we made exciting runs down the wing and looked fast and threatening - too often targets were missed, opposition were allowed to get free, and simple errors made things much more difficult than they had to be.
In the final quarter, the first two goals went our way and the margin looked like it could be reduced to a more honourable one, but two more goals to GWV ensured that the final margin of defeat was 53 points.
The best players for the day included Cooper Leon, Mitch Mellis, Adrian Kalcovski, Mihaele Zalac, Bailey White, and James Blanck.
