EASTERN RANGES - 8.8.56
SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS - 9.12.66
Saturday’s match against Sandringham Dragons was a close-fought, thrilling affair that had twists and turns throughout.
Kicking against a firm breeze in the first quarter, our boys did well to handle a Sandringham team full of run and energy across the ground. Much of the quarter was evenly poised with not a lot of scoring at either end.
A couple of goals went the opposition’s way early in the second quarter - taking the margin to 23 points at one stage - before three rapid-fire goals before the half time siren reeled in the margin to just four points.
The third quarter was once again a defensive battle with both teams scoring 1.4 to set up a thrilling final term.
The coach’s words at three-quarter time appeared to have a stunning impact with the players, as they scored three goals in as many minutes to propel Eastern into a 13-point lead.
To the home crowd’s dismay, however, Sandringham fought a last-ditch battle to get themselves back into the lead, and hit the front with six minutes to go.
In the end, Sandringham had kicked the final four goals of the match to snatch a 10-point win. The result was a bitter blow for the Ranges boys, who had looked like they would end their five-match losing streak and win in their final home game of the season.
In the end, a fighting effort that on another day might have been enough to secure the four points - hopefully we get to see those glimpses of our best footy more often in the last remaining games of season 2018.
Eastern’s best were Mitch Mellis, Kye Quirk, Joel Nathan, Jack Kritopoulos, James Blanck, and Devlin Brereton.

Next weekend is a bye, before the final two home and away games of season 2018 are played back to back.
