MATCH REPORT (BOYS) - R7 vs SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS
EASTERN RANGES - 8.7.55
SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS - 6.10.46
With a week to reflect on a disappointing performance against Gippsland, our U18 boys were determined to redeem themselves against Sandringham - one of the league's top contenders.
In the build-up, the message ‘we know we can win’ echoed around the group. If everyone brought their best footy to the table the opposition would be irrelevant - Eastern footy can beat anyone.
In the first quarter, both teams were trying to get a feel for the game, and it was fairly even for the first ten minutes.
Sandringham then found a burst of momentum, kicking the next three goals and racing out to a thirteen-point lead. This would be the highest margin for either team at any point in the game.
A goal to Mihaele Zalac brought the margin back to seven points at quarter time, however the entire second quarter only saw one goal - going to Bailey White.
We had the play, and the momentum throughout the second quarter, however Sandringham were able to prevent us from putting it on the scoreboard. The message from the coach at half time was simple: we’ve done well, we’ve got them under pressure, but the game is not over yet.
Midway through the third quarter, we hit the front briefly, before the home side scored another goal to lead at three-quarter time.
Crucially, our boys were able to hold the opposition goalless in the final quarter, and when Connor Downie kicked the goal on the run to put us up by ten points - the result was no longer in doubt.
Despite trailing at the end of the first three quarters, the boys dug deep and found a way to win in a classic match.
The best players on the day included Cody Hirst, Lachlan Stapleton, James Ross, James Blanck, Joel Nathan, and Jamieson Rossiter.
Goalkickers on the day were:
